Is AI Always the Answer to Better Performance in Digital Paid Media Platforms? Not Always.

July 20, 2026

Some of the largest tech companies in the world, namely Meta and Google, are technically tech companies, but really, they're just glorified advertising machines. An estimated 75% of Google's total revenue comes from advertising, and for Meta, it's over 98%. And what's one thing both companies are spending billions of dollars on? AI. Put those two things together, and what do you get? A push to make AI the primary feature of their ad platforms. But is leveraging their AI features always the most effective strategy for improving your campaign performance? Not always.

The Companies Are Incentivized to Push AI. You Aren't.

The companies behind these platforms, and your ad account managers, will always push you to use more of their AI features, and let's be honest, they're incentivized to. The objective is to increase adoption at scale, because the more automation adopted, the more they can scale their own profits. For businesses that want to set it and forget it, with less visibility and control over targeting and messaging, that can work fine, and many small business owners who aren't marketers do just fine with this approach. But for sophisticated marketers who understand what actually makes marketing effective, there's a trade-off, and that trade-off might be costing you results.

The Advantage+ Trade-Off: Speed for Insight

Take Meta's Advantage+ as an example. With Advantage+, you're entrusting Meta to do the heavy lifting: its algorithm finds your target audience, while you provide only broad, basic demographic and geographic data. In many cases, this genuinely works, and plenty of businesses have found real results with it. But here's the drawback: you can't tie performance back to a specific audience profile, which leaves you with no real understanding of what that audience likes, engages with, and converts from. Yes, you still get ad-level metrics and messaging data, but that handicaps your ability to optimize and expand campaigns based on the one thing that actually matters: your potential customers.

That's the trade-off with leaning on AI in advertising: you trade transparency for speed, and audience insight for front-end metrics like CTR, CPA, and conversions. But it's not the front-end metrics that tell you what's actually working, it's whether the message is resonating with your audience.

Build Around Your Audience, Not Around the Algorithm

So how do you build a more insightful, more effective campaign? It's more labor-intensive. It's more manual. But building around your actual audience segments is the key. Yes, it takes more time and more effort, but now you have insights and metrics tied directly back to your audience, and those insights aren't just valuable to your ad performance, they're valuable to your business.

At Nobos Digital, the DNA is built and centered around one thing, and one thing alone: the customer. We call it persona-based marketing. Think of it like a wheel: your personas are the hub, and your channels, SEO, paid media, email, content, are the spokes. Every spoke only works because it's connected to that center. Take the hub away, and the spokes don't have anything to turn around, the wheel can't do what it was built to do. Every campaign and initiative at Nobos Digital isn't just built on this approach, it's identified and developed around it, regardless of whether the service is SEO or advertising. The results speak for themselves: one of our clients saw a 10.2x ROAS using our persona-based approach to campaign builds.

Don't get me wrong, AI absolutely has a place in advertising. But how you use it should serve one objective: understanding your highest-value customers. If the AI tools are helping you progressively understand your audience better, keep it going. If they're not, it may be time to rethink your strategy. AI is a tool, not the solution. Great marketing strategy is the solution, and the solution starts with the human, and from there, you decide what tools to help get you there.
